Importing Bitaxe in 2026: The real cost of abolishing the €150 customs duty exemption

Key takeaways
A Bitaxe import is a direct purchase of a Bitcoin solo miner from a dealer outside the EU, where the buyer becomes the importer and bears import VAT, customs duties, and clearance fees. As of July 1, 2026, the previous customs exemption for shipments up to 150 Euros has been abolished; instead, a flat customs duty of 3 Euros per item applies. For a single Bitaxe, this reform increases the import cost by exactly 3.57 Euros. Other items make it expensive: 19 percent import VAT on the value of goods plus freight, shipping itself, and the courier's disbursement fee. Example calculation with 104.99 US dollars merchandise value and 40 US dollars shipping: 153.80 Euros at the doorstep, excluding courier fees. A Bitaxe Gamma 601 assembled in Bavaria costs 129 to 149 Euros at Polarblocks, including VAT, without a customs form.
What changed with customs on July 1, 2026?
Until the end of June, a rule applied that every online shopper knew, even if they never looked it up: shipments from third countries with a goods value of up to 150 Euros were duty-free. Not tax-free, that's a difference I'll come back to. But duty-free.
This exemption is gone. With Council Regulation 2026/382 of the European Union, Customs Exemption Regulation 1186/2009 was amended as of July 1, 2026. The exemption limit is replaced by a flat customs duty of 3 Euros per product category, i.e., per declared item on the customs declaration. German customs authorities explain this with a very down-to-earth example: Ten pairs of socks, two cable ties, and four pairs of trousers in one shipment result in three items and thus nine Euros in flat customs duty.
A single Bitaxe is one item. Three Euros. That's the whole reform, as far as your living room is concerned.
Original wording
"The import duty exemption for goods in consignments with a total value of up to 150 Euros, previously provided for in the Customs Exemption Regulation, will be completely abolished from the stated date. A flat customs duty of 3 Euros per product category (meaning per declared item on the customs declaration) is provided for."

What does an imported Bitaxe really cost?
Let's calculate it with open assumptions, so you can replace any number. A US shop currently lists the Bitaxe Gamma 601 for 104.99 US dollars regularly (as of August 2, 2026). For international shipping, I'll assume 40 US dollars. This is an assumption, not an offer; enter your actual shipping cost if you have it. Exchange rate 0.8707 Euros per US dollar (European Central Bank reference rate, July 31, 2026, exchange rate dependent).
| Item | Amount | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Value of goods | 91.41 Euros | 104.99 US dollars times 0.8707 |
| Shipping | 34.83 Euros | Assumption 40 US dollars, please replace |
| Customs value | 126.24 Euros | Goods plus freight up to the EU border |
| Flat customs duty since July 1, 2026 | 3.00 Euros | one item |
| Import VAT 19 percent | 24.56 Euros | on customs value plus customs duty, i.e., 129.24 Euros |
| Total at the doorstep | 153.80 Euros | without courier fee |
105 dollars have become 154 Euros, and the parcel delivery person has not yet collected. Courier services charge their own fee for the advance payment of import duties; how high it is depends on the terms of carriage of the respective service provider and varies considerably. I deliberately do not name a number that I cannot prove for every provider.
Why aren't the 3 Euros in customs the real problem?
Now for the calculation that was not in any headline. The same import would have cost 150.23 Euros on June 30, 2026: no customs duty, import VAT only on the customs value of 126.24 Euros, making 23.99 Euros. Today it is 153.80 Euros.
The much-described abolition of the 150-Euro customs exemption limit thus increases the cost of your Bitaxe by 3 Euros in customs duty plus 57 cents in tax on that customs duty. A total of 3.57 Euros. That's less than the miner consumes in electricity in a month.
The real cost driver is two lines above and has been in effect since July 2021: import VAT. It applies from the first cent, it is calculated not only on the value of the goods but also on shipping, and at 24.56 Euros, it is almost seven times as large as the entire customs reform. Anyone who complains about the three Euros and does not include freight has been annoyed by the wrong item.
And another detail that is often overlooked: The flat rate applies to distance selling shipments whose intrinsic value does not exceed 150 Euros. If you buy a larger device or two miners, you cross the threshold and the regular tariff rate applies again. ASIC miners are usually not classified as data processing machines in customs tariffs, but as electrical devices with their own function; the US customs authority has explicitly decided this for a Bitcoin miner. Which rate applies to your specific shipment is stated in the Electronic Customs Tariff. Don't rely on my assessment, but look it up.
154 Euros imported or 149 Euros fully assembled
The Bitaxe Home Solo Miner in the Arctic Night Edition costs 149 Euros including VAT, comes with a suitable power supply, is hand-assembled in Bavaria, and individually tested. No customs form, no disbursement fee, two years legal warranty. The white Snowstorm Edition starts at 129 Euros.
What costs do buyers overlook when importing directly?
The power supply. The most underestimated item of all. US devices come with US plugs, and a travel adapter does not turn a 110-volt power supply into a German one. Factor in a subsequent purchase: 15 Euros for normal operation, 25 to 35 Euros if you want to overclock. I have detailed which wattage you really need in the Bitaxe power supply guide.
The warranty. Two years of statutory warranty apply to sellers in the EU. If you buy in Colorado, the seller's law applies, and your claim is worth as much as your willingness to enforce it there. For a device costing 150 Euros, this willingness is usually low.
Return shipping. If the fan rattles after four months, the package back across the Atlantic will cost you more than a new fan. I have imported hardware from the US myself to test it and have already done this calculation. It never works out.
The waiting time. Between ordering and ringing the doorbell, there's freight, customs clearance, and, if in doubt, a letter asking you to submit your invoice. This is not a disaster, but it's also not the Saturday afternoon when you actually wanted to set up the miner.
Is importing even worth it anymore?
For one device: practically never. The example calculation results in 153.80 Euros plus courier fee plus power supply, and for that, you get a device without an EU warranty. The same chip, fully configured, with Noctua fan and German contact person, costs between 129 and 149 Euros.
There is one honest exception: If you want a model that no one in Europe carries, importing is the only way. Then calculate it cleanly beforehand, instead of getting annoyed about the cash-on-delivery slip afterwards. And if you're still undecided about which device is right for you, the checklist before buying your first solo miner can help.
What you get for your money remains the same in both cases: around 1.3 TH/s at about 17 watts, i.e., 149 kWh per year and 46 to 52 Euros in electricity costs at 31.1 to 35 cents per kilowatt hour. With a network difficulty of 126,231,507,121,868, the calculated block-found chance is 1 in 13,224 per year. The calculation method is Difficulty multiplied by 2 to the power of 32 divided by one's own hashrate, which is 417,046,303,702 seconds. In case of success: 3.125 BTC plus transaction fees, at a rate of 55,023.10 Euros per Bitcoin, approximately 171,900 Euros (exchange rate dependent, as of August 2, 2026, 06:11 UTC, Kraken). Statistically, this results in an annual return of 13.00 Euros against 46 to 52 Euros in electricity. A losing business, and I say that as someone who sells these devices. The full expected value calculation is transparent.
| Lifestyle Factor | Bitaxe Gamma | Traditional Lottery | 3500W Industrial Antminer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chances of Winning per Year | Approx. 1 in 13,224 for 3.125 BTC plus transaction fees, currently about 171,900 Euros (exchange rate dependent, as of August 2, 2026). The ticket remains active as long as the miner runs. | Eurojackpot: 1 in 139,838,160 per lottery field. The stake is gone on Friday evening, regardless of the outcome. | Statistically 1 in 64 at 270 TH/s. Numerically better, economically devoured by the electricity bill. |
| Running Costs in Home Office | 46 to 52 Euros electricity per year, about 4 Euros per month. Runs quieter than a refrigerator on a bookshelf. | Two lottery fields per week cost over 200 Euros per year and leave no physical object behind. | 30,660 kWh, i.e., 9,535 to 10,731 Euros electricity per year, plus noise at hair dryer level. Living room excluded. |
| Drawer Risk (Boredom Factor) | Low: Dashboard, firmware updates, and community constantly provide talking points, the device remains visible. | High: A lottery ticket has the half-life of a receipt. | High: After the first electricity bill, the device moves to the basement, then to classifieds. |
| Learning Effect & Blockchain Fascination at Your Fingertips | Maximum: Difficulty, hashrate, and shares run live on your own device, Bitcoin becomes tangible from the inside. | Zero: Nothing happens between placing the bet and the draw that you could understand. | Present, but dearly bought: the same lesson is available with Bitaxe for one two-hundredth of the consumption. |

Frequently Asked Questions about Bitaxe Import
Do I have to pay customs duty on every Bitaxe shipment from the USA since July 2026?
Yes. The customs exemption for shipments up to 150 Euros was abolished on July 1, 2026. For distance selling shipments with an intrinsic value of up to 150 Euros, a flat customs duty of 3 Euros per item is levied; above that, the regular tariff rate applies.
How high is the import VAT on a Bitcoin Miner?
19 percent, calculated on the customs value plus the levied customs duty. The customs value includes the value of the goods and freight costs up to the EU external border. In the example calculation, this is 24.56 Euros, making it the largest single item besides the device itself.
Can I save import VAT if the seller declares the package as a gift?
No, and you shouldn't try. An incorrect customs declaration is a misdemeanor or a crime, depending on the case. The amount saved is disproportionate to the risk.
Do I get the same hardware when buying in Germany?
The Bitaxe is an open-source design; the BM1366 chip is the same. Differences arise in cooling, fan, power supply, and configuration. A Polarblocks device comes with a Noctua fan, a suitable power supply, and tested clock speeds.
