The crucial point that hardly anyone mentions: In terms of efficiency, the two are almost on par. 13.1 J/TH for the Bitaxe, 13.5 J/TH for the S21 XP. The ratio of electricity costs to statistical yield is 3.95 to 1 versus 4.1 to 1. The Bitaxe wins this comparison not through better technology, but solely through scale.

Is the Bitaxe Gamma 601 really more efficient than an Antminer S21 XP?

No. And anyone who claims otherwise is selling you a story instead of a measurement. According to official manufacturer specifications, the Antminer S21 XP operates at 13.5 J/TH with 270 TH/s and 3,645 watts of power consumption, with a tolerance of plus or minus 3 percent for hashrate and plus or minus 5 percent for power. The Bitaxe Gamma 601 achieves 13.1 J/TH with 1.3 TH/s and 17 watts.

That's about a three percent difference. Three percent is within the tolerance with which Bitmain specifies its own devices. This translates to: In terms of pure energy efficiency per terahash, the gap between a 129-euro device for a shelf and an industrial machine costing several thousand euros has practically disappeared. The Bitaxe wins in efficiency against older Antminers. Not against this one.

However, efficiency alone does not determine whether a device is right for you. It only indicates how much electricity is consumed per unit of computational work performed. Everything else is a matter of location, connection, noise, and capital expenditure.

What does a year of solo mining really cost with both devices?

Let's calculate with a realistic German household tariff of 0.35 Euro per kilowatt-hour and continuous operation.

The S21 XP consumes about 31,930 kilowatt-hours per year at 3,645 watts. That's about 11,176 Euros in electricity costs. The Bitaxe Gamma 601 consumes about 148.9 kilowatt-hours at 17 watts, which is about 52 Euros per year. This is roughly equivalent to a top-efficiency refrigerator.

This is contrasted by statistical annual yields of approximately 2,741 Euros for the S21 XP and approximately 13.20 Euros for the Bitaxe. Both devices thus incur a loss in expected value, and they do so in almost identical proportions. Anyone who tells you that solo mining at home costs nothing or yields ten euros in profit per year has either not calculated or is misleading you with their calculations.

What is the chance of finding your own block?

Which device is actually suitable for an apartment?

Here, the technical parity abruptly ends. The S21 XP requires a dedicated high-voltage power supply, active exhaust ventilation, and a room you wouldn't want to enter while it's running. Its fans generate a noise level that is simply unacceptable in a residential building.

The Bitaxe Gamma 601 connects to a standard Schuko socket, consuming 15 to 19 watts according to product data, depending on clock speed and temperature. Power supply, 3D-printed stand, and OLED display are included. It sits on a shelf, displays hashrate and chip temperature, and doesn't disturb anyone during dinner.

That is the whole difference, and it is bigger than any efficiency discussion: 129 Euros instead of several thousand. 17 watts instead of 3,645. A power outlet instead of an electrician's appointment. Living room instead of a hall.

Compared to our last report, the chances of hitting a block for both devices have slightly decreased, while electricity costs remain unchanged. All figures in this article refer to this exact date and will be re-evaluated at the next major retarget.
