Which device is more efficient, the S21e XP Hyd or the Bitaxe Gamma 601?
Neither. I, as the manufacturer of a 17-watt miner, don't even like this answer. The Antminer S21e XP Hyd is at 13.0 joules per terahash, the Bitaxe Gamma 601 at 13.1. Anyone who constructs a winner from this is measuring noise.
The reason is trivial: both devices use chips of the same manufacturing generation. An ASIC doesn't compute more efficiently because it's larger, but only more.

What are the annual electricity costs of the Antminer S21e XP Hyd?
11,180 watts in continuous operation results in 97,937 kilowatt-hours per year. At 0.35 euros per kilowatt-hour, this is approximately 34,278 euros. Not per data center, not per hall. Per device.
A German household consumes about three to four megawatt-hours per year for everything combined. The S21e XP Hyd consumes many times that, just for hashes. The Bitaxe Gamma 601 comes in at 148.9 kilowatt-hours over the same period, which is about 52 euros.
Yes, industrial operators don't pay 35 cents. However, this article is aimed at people who want to buy such a device privately. And they pay household rates.

From this, for the S21e XP Hyd, the chance of finding a block in solo mining is approximately 1 in 20 per year, statistically about 8,731 euros in annual yield against 34,278 euros in electricity costs. The Bitaxe Gamma 601 comes in at approximately 1 in 13,355 per year and about 13.20 euros in annual yield at 52 euros in electricity costs.
Both devices therefore burn approximately four times what they statistically yield. This is not an accusation against Bitmain and not a sales argument for us, but the state of the network at this difficulty. Solo mining in Germany is not a return model, but a lottery with a known stake.
Can I operate an S21e XP Hyd at home?
Practically no. The device is water-cooled and does not have its own integrated circuit. It requires a pump, a heat exchanger, and a way to dissipate eleven kilowatts of waste heat. Additionally, on the electrical side: 11.18 kW continuous load is not a standard plug issue, but a matter of three-phase connection and fusing.
Anyone seriously planning this is not planning a device, but a small system. The Bitaxe Gamma 601, on the other hand, is simply plugged into a power outlet. I intentionally do not mention decibel levels for loudness, as we have not measured according to standards: The Bitaxe is audible in a quiet room but unobtrusive. A hydro-ASIC is not.
Which device is worthwhile for whom?
The S21e XP Hyd is a tool for operators with industrial electricity, cooling infrastructure, and personnel. There, it is very good. But this environment has nothing to do with a terraced house.
The Bitaxe Gamma 601 costs 129 euros in the Snowstorm Edition, draws 15 to 19 watts according to product data, and comes with a power supply, 3D stand, and OLED display. It won't make anyone rich, but it offers a real chance at a full block and makes Proof of Work tangible.
The guiding question when buying for home use is therefore not "how many joules per terahash", but: What power connection do I have, where will the device be placed, and what is it allowed to cost.

With the retarget on August 8, 2026, the difficulty is 127,479,855,693,691. All block chances and yields have been recalculated based on this, and the euro values are based on 56,404 euros per Bitcoin. Earlier versions contained an excessively high block value and an inadmissible zero entry for electricity costs. Both have been corrected.
