Not a defect, just physics.

My test device has been on an oak sideboard for over a year, about a meter from my desk. No direct sunlight, no carpet underneath, power outlet within reach. That's all there is to it. Anyone looking for a desk miner is actually looking for a place with air and power.

A detail that many underestimate: Carpet and fabric are poor surfaces. They block the air intake path under the device and collect dust. A flat stand solves both problems by elevating the casing and keeping the airflow angle clean.

What ambient temperature can a Bitaxe Gamma 601 withstand?

The Bitaxe Gamma 601 is approved for ambient temperatures from 0 to 40 degrees Celsius. More important than the room temperature is the chip temperature. According to the AxeOS documentation, as cited by D-Central as a secondary source, the emergency shutdown is triggered at around 75 degrees Celsius on the ASIC and around 105 degrees on the voltage converter.

In practical terms: A German living room at 21 degrees is uncritical, but an attic room at 34 degrees in midsummer will be. Every additional degree in the room translates almost one-to-one to the chip, because the heat sink can only maintain a fixed temperature difference to the ambient air. This rule of thumb is an assumption from everyday operation, not a manufacturer's specification.

A chip temperature significantly below 70 degrees Celsius has become established as the target range in normal operation. If you are overclocking, you should wait fifteen minutes after each change and read the value in the AxeOS dashboard before proceeding to the next step. Anything beyond that is not optimization, but wear and tear.

Regarding humidity, there is less drama than claimed in forums. Normal indoor humidity levels between 40 and 60 percent are unproblematic. It only becomes critical with condensation, i.e., when a cold device is brought into a warm, humid room. If you receive a package in winter, let it acclimatize for two hours before plugging it in.

How much heat does a Bitcoin Solo Miner actually emit?

A Bitaxe Gamma 601 consumes around 17 watts and practically releases all of that power as heat. Over a year, this amounts to approximately 148.9 kilowatt-hours. For comparison: A laptop power supply under load is in the same ballpark, while a fan heater in the bathroom is a hundred times more.

This figure alleviates the most common concern before purchase. A single device will not turn any study into a sauna. What you will notice, however, is the air directly above the heatsink. A warm current rises there, detectable by hand, similar to above a burning candle.

Why is dust more dangerous than heat?

Dust works slowly and therefore unnoticed. It settles between the aluminum fins, reduces the effective cooling surface, and causes the chip temperature to gradually rise over months. Heat, on the other hand, shows up immediately on the dashboard. One is visible, the other is not, and that is precisely where the risk lies.

A device placed on the floor or under a desk collects significantly more dust than one at chest height. Pets significantly exacerbate the problem. In my case, a cat made the difference: after four months on a floor shelf, the heatsink was visibly clogged; on the sideboard after the same period, hardly at all.

The countermeasure costs nothing. Every three months, blow it out with compressed air, briefly, from a distance, blocking the fan with your finger so it doesn't over-rotate. If you're replacing the heatsink anyway, do the cleaning at the same time.

How does a desk placement compare to a lottery and an industrial hall?

The three approaches aim for the same improbable hit and differ in everything that follows. The Bitaxe Gamma 601 wins in terms of running costs, suitability for living spaces, and learning effect. How to set up the location in five steps?

A good spot can be found in fifteen minutes and will then last for years. Five steps are enough, from measuring to the first check on the dashboard. The most important one is the last, because only by comparing two measurements will you know if the chosen spot is truly suitable.

  1. Choose a surface and check airflow. Horizontal, stable, at least ten centimeters free space above the heatsink and no wall directly at the intake side. No carpet, no fabric, no closed display cabinet.
  2. Exclude sun and heating. Direct midday sun behind glass raises the ambient temperature by several degrees. A spot above or next to a radiator has the same result in winter. Both reduce hash rate as soon as it gets warm.
  3. Elevate the device. A stand for 9 euros lifts the casing, keeps the intake path clear, and prevents the miner from drawing dust directly from the surface. This is the most effective and cheapest measure of all.
  4. Lay power and network cleanly. A dedicated outlet instead of an overloaded strip, the power supply lying free and not jammed under the desk. Check Wi-Fi reception at the location beforehand with your phone.
  5. Measure again after two hours. Read the chip temperature and hash rate in the AxeOS dashboard and compare them with the value directly after startup. If the temperature continues to rise or the hash rate falls, the airflow is not sufficient.

What speaks against the desk as a location?

Three things, and they need to be honestly stated. First, the Bitaxe Gamma 601 is not silent. Below 35 decibels, it stays within the range of a quiet room, but it is still audible, especially at night and particularly at higher clock speeds. Anyone sleeping in the same room will notice it.

Secondly, the device emits light. The status indicator is constantly in view on the desk, and what appears to be a nice detail during the day can be disruptive in a darkened room. Placing it to the side instead of directly in front solves this without effort.

Thirdly, there's the sobering calculation. The statistical expected value of a Bitaxe Gamma 601 is about 12.81 euros per year compared to about 52 euros in electricity costs, meaning a deficit of about 39 euros per year. No location in the world changes that. If you know that number and still place the device, you're placing it for the right reason.
