Low-power Bitcoin mining refers to devices with continuous power consumption under approximately 100 watts, operated from a standard Schuko outlet. For comparison: an Antminer S21 Pro draws 3,510 watts and reaches 76 decibels, according to Hashrate Index. This is industrial equipment and does not belong in a home.

The 100-watt limit is not a standard, but a practical threshold. Below this, no dedicated power line is needed. Below this, the waste heat is not noticeable. And below this, the electricity bill remains in a range that doesn't require discussion with a partner.

I ran three devices from my own range for months on a power meter. The result was unspectacular and precisely for that reason, interesting: the values on the datasheets are quite accurate, as long as you leave the overclocking alone.

Which mining options truly remain under 100 watts in 2026?

Three device types reliably stay under 100 watts in 2026. The NMminer TV draws around 0.8 to 1 watt and achieves up to 1,060 kilohashes per second. The Bitaxe Gamma 601 draws around 17 watts at approximately 1.3 terahashes per second. The NerdQaxe++ Rev6.1 is rated at approximately 70.6 watts in normal operation, according to its datasheet.

The leap between them is greater than the wattage figures suggest. From the NMminer TV to the Bitaxe Gamma 601, computing power increases more than a thousandfold, but consumption only seventeenfold. Therefore, the pure wattage figure is a poor basis for decision-making.

It makes more sense to ask how much computing power a kilowatt-hour generates. The Bitaxe Gamma 601 operates at around 13.1 joules per terahash. The NerdQaxe++ Rev6.1 is stated by the manufacturer to be between 14.66 and 16.5 joules per terahash. The Antminer S21 Pro achieves 15 joules per terahash. So, the smallest device in the living room is more efficient than the industrial cabinet.

The NMminer TV is excluded from this consideration. It's an ESP32 device with a color display, costs 25 Euros, and calculates at a magnitude where the block chance is mathematically 1 in 16.4 million per year. As a clock on the desk, it's charming. As a miner, it's a learning object.

How much does an economical Bitcoin miner cost per year in electricity?

The Bitaxe Gamma 601, at approximately 17 watts continuous load, consumes about 149 kilowatt-hours per year. At 0.35 Euros per kilowatt-hour, this results in approximately 52 Euros per year, or about 4.34 Euros per month. The NMminer TV comes in at about 8.8 kilowatt-hours and about 3 Euros per year.

The NerdQaxe++ Rev6.1 becomes significantly more expensive. In overclock mode, the datasheet states around 103 watts, which is about 902 kilowatt-hours and around 316 Euros per year. In normal operation at about 70.6 watts, around 618 kilowatt-hours and about 216 Euros remain.

To put the magnitude into perspective: an Antminer S21 Pro with 3,510 watts would amount to approximately 30,748 kilowatt-hours and around 10,762 Euros in electricity costs per year in Germany. This is more than two hundred times that of the Bitaxe Gamma 601. If you live in a rented apartment, you can safely skip this line.

According to BDEW, a typical German household with an annual consumption of 3,500 kilowatt-hours paid an average of 37.0 cents per kilowatt-hour in April 2026. With this value, the Bitaxe Gamma 601 would cost around 55 Euros per year instead of around 52 Euros. The calculation in this article deliberately remains at 0.35 Euros because many existing tariffs are lower.

Why isn't the most economical miner automatically the best?

Because frugality alone does not generate a block chance. The probability of finding a block follows the formula Difficulty times 2 to the power of 32 divided by one's own hashrate. According to mempool.space, the Difficulty on August 18, 2026, is 127,479,855,693,691 and the network hashrate is approximately 932 exahashes per second.

From this, the Bitaxe Gamma 601 with 1.3 terahashes per second has a calculated chance of 1 in 13,355 per year. The NerdQaxe++ Rev6.1, with 6 terahashes from overclock mode, achieves 1 in 2,894. The NMminer TV is at 1 in 16.4 million.

Now for the honest part. A found block currently yields 3.125 BTC plus transaction fees. At an exchange rate of 55,426 Euros per Bitcoin, this is approximately 173,206 Euros, depending on the exchange rate, as of August 18, 2026, 06:05 UTC according to mempool.space. The statistical expected value of the Bitaxe Gamma 601 is therefore approximately 12.97 Euros per year.

Approximately 12.97 Euros in expected value versus approximately 52 Euros in electricity costs. The ratio does not improve for any device: the NerdQaxe++ Rev6.1 has an expected value of approximately 59.86 Euros versus approximately 316 Euros in electricity, and the Antminer S21 Pro has approximately 2,334 Euros versus approximately 10,762 Euros. Solo mining in the home is not a business model, but a lottery ticket with side effects.

How to further reduce the energy consumption of your home miner?

In five steps, all of which work without tools. The order is important: first measure, then adjust. If you tinker with the clock before knowing the actual consumption, you're optimizing against a datasheet instead of your own power outlet. The practical effect is greater than most people expect.

  1. Measure consumption instead of estimating. A power meter for under 15 Euros shows the actual consumption, including power supply losses. For me, the measured values were about 2 to 3 watts above the miner's specification, depending on the power supply.
  2. Reduce clock and voltage instead of increasing them. In the AxeOS dashboard, frequency and core voltage can be reduced incrementally. If you go down two steps from the factory settings, you lose hashrate, but save disproportionately on watts.
  3. Dimension the power supply appropriately. A 50-watt power supply on a 17-watt device operates far below its optimal efficiency. For normal operation, a 25-watt power supply is sufficient and converts more efficiently.
  4. Choose a cool and dust-free location. The cooler the intake air, the slower the fan spins and the less power it draws. The operating range of the Bitaxe Gamma 601 is between 0 and 40 degrees Celsius ambient temperature.
  5. Consume solar surplus first. If you operate a balcony power plant, you can fully cover 17 watts of continuous load on sunny days from your own generation. Only then do the effective costs drop significantly below the approximately 52 Euros per year.

What are the arguments against an energy-efficient solo miner?

Three things, and they are rarely found in product descriptions. Firstly, the device is not statistically profitable: an expected value of about 12.97 Euros versus about 52 Euros in electricity means an average loss of about 39 Euros per year. If you're looking for a calculation that balances out, you're looking in the wrong place.

Secondly, even an economical miner is not silent. Under load, the fan makes an audible noise, and in a quiet bedroom, you'll notice it. In the living room next to a running TV or in an office with background noise, however, it reliably fades into the background.

Thirdly, every watt generates waste heat. In winter, this is a welcome side effect. In midsummer, however, the device in an attic apartment can quickly reach the upper limit of its operating range and throttle itself. This is not a defect, but it costs hashrate precisely when it is least convenient.

Which option suits which person?

The decision depends less on technology than on one's own expectations. If you're looking for an object for your desk, take the smallest device. If you want a real, albeit tiny, chance at a full block, you need terahashes. If you expect both at once, you will be disappointed.
